What scores in a cribbage hand
- Fifteen — any combination of cards totalling 15 scores 2.
- Pair — 2 points. Three of a kind is 6, four of a kind is 12.
- Run — 1 point per card in a run of three or more, counted for each variation.
- Flush — 4 for four cards of one suit in hand, 5 if the starter matches. In the crib only a five-card flush counts.
- His nobs — 1 point for the jack matching the starter's suit.
Hands people always get wrong
A double run scores twice: 4-5-6-6 counts two runs of three plus a pair, for 8. The perfect 29 hand is 5-5-5-J with the fifth five as the starter matching the jack's suit. And the hand that looks strong but counts nothing — 19 — simply does not exist as a score, which is why players joke about a "nineteen hand".
Common questions
- Does the starter card count for both players?
- Yes. The cut card is shared, so it counts in both hands and in the crib.
- Is the crib counted differently?
- Only for flushes. A crib flush needs all five cards in the same suit; a four-card flush counts nothing there.
