How to play War

War is the simplest two-player card game there is: the deck is split in half, both players flip their top card, and the higher card takes both. Capture all 52 cards to win.

Setup

Shuffle a standard 52-card deck and deal 26 cards face down to each player. Nobody looks at their cards.

A battle

Both players flip their top card at the same time. The higher rank wins both cards, which go to the bottom of the winner's pile. Aces are high; suits don't matter.

Going to war

If the two cards tie, it's war: each player puts three cards face down and then flips a fourth. The higher fourth card wins the whole pile. Another tie means another war.

Running out

If you don't have enough cards for a war, you play your last card as the deciding one. A player who runs out of cards completely loses.

Tips from the table

  • War is pure luck — there are no decisions, which makes it perfect for teaching young kids card ranks.
  • Games can run long; many families agree to stop after a set time and count cards. Here, 400 rounds ends the game.
  • A popular variant plays with two cards down in a war instead of three to speed things up.
