How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire (also called Shanghai or Taipei) is a tile matching puzzle played with a 144-tile mahjong set stacked into the classic turtle. Remove every tile by matching identical pairs, but only tiles that are free may be taken.

Which tiles are free

A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and at least one of its long sides — left or right — is open. Tiles blocked on both sides, or buried under a higher layer, must be uncovered first.

Matching

Click one free tile then another with the same face to clear the pair. The four flower tiles all match each other, and so do the four season tiles; everything else matches only its exact twin.

Hints, undo and shuffles

Hint highlights a legal pair, undo steps back through your matches, and each layout gives you three shuffles that redistribute the remaining faces if you run out of moves.

Winning

Clear all 144 tiles to win. Every deal here is generated so a full solution exists — get stuck and it is the order of your matches, not the deal, that closed the door.

Tips from the table

  • Work down from the top layers first; buried tiles are the ones that trap you.
  • When three or four of the same face are available, pick the pair that frees the most tiles rather than the closest pair.
  • Prefer taking tiles from the long bottom rows early — their ends open up the whole board.
  • Save your shuffles: use a hint first to be sure there really is nothing left to match.
