The upper section bonus
Ones through sixes sit in the upper section. Score sixty-three or more there — roughly three of each number — and you collect a thirty-five point bonus that often decides the game.
Yahtzee gives you thirteen turns, three rolls per turn, and thirteen scoring boxes that each get used exactly once. The tension is entirely in which box you are willing to spend.

Three and four of a kind, full house, small and large straight, Yahtzee and chance. Straights and the full house are fixed scores; the of-a-kind boxes pay the total of all five dice.
Every box must be filled by the end, so a bad turn means choosing where to take a zero. Ones or a long-shot large straight are usually the cheapest places.
