How to play Minesweeper

Minesweeper is a logic puzzle on a grid of hidden squares. Some squares hide mines. Open every safe square without opening a mine and you clear the board. Each number you uncover tells you how many mines touch that square.

The board

Easy is 9×9 with 10 mines, Normal is 12×12 with 24 mines and Hard is 16×16 with 40 mines. The counter at the top shows how many mines are left once you subtract your flags.

Your first tap is always safe

Mines are placed after your first tap, never on that square or the squares around it, so the first tap always opens a clear area to start from.

Reading the numbers

A number from 1 to 8 counts the mines in the eight squares around it, including diagonals. A blank square has no mines nearby, so its neighbours open automatically.

Flags

Mark a square you know is a mine with a flag. On a phone, long-press a square or switch to Flag mode with the Dig and Flag buttons. Flagged squares can't be opened by accident.

Chording

When a number already has that many flags around it, tap the number to open all its other neighbours at once. If a flag is wrong, a mine will go off, so only chord when you are sure.

Tips from the table

  • Start at the corners of open areas: a 1 touching a single hidden square means that square is a mine.
  • Look for 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 patterns along a wall — they show exactly where the mines sit.
  • Count flags against each number before chording.
  • When only a guess is left, guess where the fewest unknown squares meet the most numbers.
