How to play Garbage (Trash)

Garbage, also known as Trash, is a quick family game. Each player has a row of face-down cards in slots numbered Ace to 10. Fill every slot with its matching card before your opponent does.

The layout

Each player gets ten face-down cards in two rows of five: slots A, 2, 3 … 10.

Your turn

Draw from the stock, or take the top garbage card if it fills one of your slots. Put it in its slot, turn up the card that was there, and keep going with that card.

Jacks, Queens and Kings

Jacks are wild and fill any face-down slot. If you later draw the real card for a slot holding a Jack, you can swap it in and use the Jack again. Queens and Kings are garbage and end your turn.

Rounds

When you fill every slot you win the round, and next round you play with one fewer slot. The first player to win a round with just one slot wins the game.

Tips from the table

  • Use Jacks on slots whose cards you've already seen in the garbage pile — those numbers are harder to find.
  • Watch your opponent's turned-up slots: cards they need won't come back to you from the garbage.
