The four free cells
Each free cell holds exactly one card. They are your temporary parking spaces, and how many are empty decides how big a sequence you can shift at once.
FreeCell deals all 52 cards face up across eight columns, so nothing is hidden. Almost every deal can be solved — the challenge is pure planning, not luck.

Tableau columns build downward in alternating colours. Any card may move into an empty column, and foundations build up by suit from the ace.
You can move (free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns) cards as a single run. Keeping cells and columns free is what makes long moves possible.
Send every card to the four foundations. Unlimited undo means a losing line is never fatal — back up and try another order.
